Over last weekend my family and I took a road trip to Custer State Park in South Dakota. Our plans were to arrive friday afternoon, go to Mt Rushmore for the evening lighting ceremony, and then travel through the park on Saturday fishing and sight seeing.
When we arrived on Friday afternoon we checked into the Battle Creek Lodge in Keystone. It is a cozy place with some wonderful people running it. After checking in we headed for Mt. Rushmore with a short stop off at the Ruby House Restraunt for some dinner.
We arrived at Mt. Rushmore shortly after dark. I had been there before (during the daytime) but none of us had ever seen it at night. As you walk up to the viewing area the walkway is lined with all the state flags.
It was a pretty dark night so the faces on the mountain were nothing more than a vague outline.
Before they light up the faces they have a park ranger come out and give a speech and they also show a very patriotic movie. We were all excited for the lighting of the sculpture. At the end of the movie they play the National Anthem and the lights kick on and you get your first good view of the Mt. Rushmore sculpture.
After a trip through the gift shop we headed back to the lodge to get a good night sleep. I had a big day of fishing planned for Saturday. (continued)
